Lot Essay

The form of these shelves is strikingly similar to that in blue and green decoration hanging on the wall behind Madame Boucher in François Boucher's famous portrait of 1743 that is now in the Frick Collection in New York (B.Davidson, Paintings in the Frick Collection, New York, 1990, vol. II, pp. 3-6). Boucher was an avid collector of Chinoiserie and the shelf is shown supporting part of this.
