With handle and long canal nozzle, the pierced discus decorated in relief with the symbolic figure of the Good Shepherd carrying a sheep across his shoulders, bordered by three parallel grooves

Lot Essay

The iconography of the Good Shepherd refers to passages in the Gospels, John x. 1-27, xxi. 15-17, Matthew xv. 24 and Luke xv. 4-5, and was also considered to symbolise Christ as the leader of souls in their passage to the other world.
