Lot Essay
The arms are those of the Van Schoonhoven family of Rotterdam and Leiden and of the Geraerds family of Haarlem. Another example with these coats-of-arms is a tea-caddy, which was part of a tea-set, and would have been ordered on the occasion of the marriage of Thymon van Schoonhoven (1710-1766) and Elisabeth Geraerds (1720-1751) in 1739. Van Schoonhoven was a member of the town council of Leiden and became Burgomaster in 1759. Between 1760 and 1765, he was one of the directors of the V.O.C. His wife came from a wealthy Haarlem family of officials and regents. See J.A. Jörg and Jan van Campen, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 1997, p. 305.
