Decorated en grisaille and gilt with an accollée coat-of-arms surmounted by a coronet, reserved on a ground in bianco-sopra-bianco of floral scrollwork, within a spearhead-pattern band at the well, the rim encircled by a Louis XV-style border, one with rim crack

Lot Essay

The arms are those of the Van Schoonhoven family of Rotterdam and Leiden and of the Geraerds family of Haarlem. Another example with these coats-of-arms is a tea-caddy, which was part of a tea-set, and would have been ordered on the occasion of the marriage of Thymon van Schoonhoven (1710-1766) and Elisabeth Geraerds (1720-1751) in 1739. Van Schoonhoven was a member of the town council of Leiden and became Burgomaster in 1759. Between 1760 and 1765, he was one of the directors of the V.O.C.
