Lot Essay

See Adrian Sassoon, Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, Catalogue of the Collection, The J. Paul Getty Museum, 1991, cat. no. 12 for a detailed discussion of the model and the variations and permutations in which it was produced. Reference to the two lapis caillouté referenced in the provenance is made in the body of the text and footnote 32.

The form was developed to serve marrons glacé or candied chestnuts, the thick sugary syrup oozing from the basket onto the unpierced stand basin.
