1790-1798, blue B/Potter/51 mark to the cream-jug
Each piece finely painted with a still life of flowers and vegetables on a ledge, reserved on the gold ground further painted with a rich flower garland, comprising:
A shaped square tray, 9¾in. (24.8cm.) wide
A cylindrical teapot and cover, 4 1/8in. (10.4cm.) high
A cream-jug, 4½in. (11.4cm.) high
A sugar-bowl and cover, 4 5/8in. (11.7cm.) high
A cylindrical cup and saucer, 5 1/8in. (13cm.) diam., the saucer (6)

Lot Essay

For a discussion of this shortlived factory operating in Paris under the patronage of an Englishman, see Aileen Dawson, A Catalogue of French Porcelain in the British Museum, London, 1994, pp. 379-381. Other marked pieces are in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. The significance of the number beneath the name has not yet been confirmed. It is presumed to be a painter's number or factory notation of some sort.
