Circa 1785, stamped CASPAR.SCHNEIDER
The D-shaped white marble top above a molded border, over a panelled frieze mounted with fluting and husk trails, with a central drawer flanked by a spring-loaded hinged drawer to either side, on fluted supports joined by a conforming galleried undertier, on turned tapering legs ending in toupie feet, the marble top probably replaced

Lot Essay

Caspar Schneider, maître in 1786.

Married to Marie-Catherine Oeben, the widow of the celebrated ébéniste Martin Carlin, Caspar Schneider took over the latter's workshp and continued to work in his elegant and sophisticated late Louis XVI style. Schneider produced or modified a number of porcelain-mounted pieces, such as the exquisite Sèvres-mounted jewel coffer, which was executed by Carlin and modified by Schneider for the Duke and Duchess of Sachsen-Teschen, and was sold from the di Portanova collection in these Rooms, 2 November 2000, lot 200. Schneider produced a number of related consoles dessertes, such as a similar pair sold from the collection of The Lord Trevor sold Christie's London, 14 April 1983, lot 94.
