BURTON, Richard Francis (1821-1890). Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah, London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1855-1856. 3 volumes, 8° (215 x 135mm). Half title in volume III (not called for in vols. I & II), 14 lithographed plates, all but one coloured or tinted, folding wood-engraved map and 3 plans. (Lacks advertisement leaves at end of vol. one, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half calf, spines gilt with 2 lettering-pieces (joints and edges lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, the title page of vol. one inscribed: "To Stick in the Mud", and signed with Burton's Arabic signature; additionally signed "Al-Kaptan" in Arabic (Burton was a captain in the Indian army).
