(Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half calf, spine gilt with lettering-piece (upper cover detached, upper joint splitting, wear to corners, rubbed and scuffed). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, the title inscribed: "Mrs Jane Laws book. A present from the author in 1826" and at chapter I: "Mrs Jane Laws book. A present from the author".
"James Silk Buckingham, founder of the Calcutta Journal, the Oriental Herald and Colonial Review, The Shynx and The Argus, social reformer and founder member of the British and Foreign Institute, travelled to the Middle East as a captain and merchant. This work relates the section of his voyages which took him through Nazereth, the Plains of Hauran, Damascus, Tripoli, the Lebanon and Balbec to Aleppo. An appendix refutes the charges of plagiarism brought by Burckhardt and Bankes against Buckingham's Travels in Palestine [London, 1821]" (Blackmer 232); Hamilton 58.
