Lot Essay
This study seems at first to be an unusual use by Girault de Prangey of his already unusual vertical format. In it the subject and title seem to be somewhat at odds with each other. While purporting to show a detail (or details) of the north entrance to the great mosque, the carefully composed image manages to introduce several important elements of the building in a series of planes that recede towards and into a deep black opening. In the foreground we can clearly see a short pilaster at the edge of one of the solid piers, above which is a well-defined example of one of the decorative rosettes. Beyond is one of the carved windows, beneath the top of the wall with its distinctive crenellations. To modern eyes, the centre area of this image seems remarkably empty for a photograph of the early 1840s, but on closer inspection it reveals one of the most distinctive aspects of the architecture - the brick and stucco construction.
