Lot Essay

Alfred Morrison, was one of the greatest, if not the greatest Victorian collector of historical ephemera and artifacts. Upon his death the sale lasted three days, the British Museum buying a substantial quantity of Nelson's letters for their collection. The lock here offered originally formed part of lot 3133, the remainder being a book, several other locks of hair in envelopes inscribed 'For my dear dear Sir William 1790/1' and a letter requesting to go to Naples. The lot is sold with copies of the relevant pages from the 1919 catalogue, and period notes made at the time of sale and enclosed in an envelope behind the frame.
