A SWISS SPLIT-PEARL SET AND ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
Geneva, circa 1780/1800, maker's mark 'II/IB' probably for Jean-Joseph Isaac Bellamy, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold
Oval box, the panels on cover, sides and base engine-turned with reeding and enamelled with translucent royal blue encrusted with gold, green and blue paillons depicting mirrored foliate scrolls and birds, within fluted gold borders, the cover inset with an octagonal enamel miniature painted with a young lady seated in a wooded ground caressing her dog and watching a sleeping young girl next to her, framed by a split-pearl border, the base centred by a composition in gold and colour paillons depicting a dog in front of an urn with two birds, the outer gold mounts chased and enamelled in opaque white and sky blue and translucent green with foliage and berries on a matted gold ground, the four side dividers similarly enamelled and chased with birds on socles
