William Evans was the second of four generations of Eton drawing masters who taught at the college from 1808-1922. William himself was a pupil at the school from 1808-1815. He was often invited to other parts of the country as a guest of his former pupils and his position afforded him the opportunity to meet influential patrons.
William exhibited views of Haddon Hall in 1838 and 1839, along with views of Lancashire, suggesting a tour of the North West, possibly in the company of his former pupil Thomas Gambier Parry. A watercolour by Parry of Haddon is dated 1838 and works by Evans formerly in the collection of William Leaf are closely related to those executed by Parry at this date. Another slightly smaller painting of figures outside Haddon Hall, also in the Leaf collection and was sold with the present watercolour in 1875.
