Lot Essay

Linnell toured North Wales with the engraver George R. Lewis during the Summer of 1813. Although this was his only visit to the region, he commented that 'that one month's study supplied [him] with material for life combined with others made elsewhere especially in Scotland.' The present watercolour and lot 76 both date from this trip which was to have such a lasting influence on Linnell's career.
