This secrétaire à abattant is closely related to the production of Christoph Hopfengärtner (1758-1843), established in Bern and related to one of the five Funk brothers, of the famous 18th century dynasty of cabinet-makers.

H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1973, band III, ill.189, illustrates a closely related secrétaire à abattant by Hofengärtner, dated 1790, at Schloss Jegenstorf near Bern. This secrétaire has identical proportions, similar gilt-metal mounts, tapering legs and an interesting marquetry scheme reminiscent of that found on our secrétaire.
