FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED TO A CLOSE FRIEND. Louisa Macpherson was the niece of Mme Ponsard (governess to the Meredith family) and daughter of the Australian politician and lawyer John Alexander Macpherson. Meredith contracted her full name to 'Louison', under which nickname he wrote to her and--as here--inscribed books to her. Louisa Macpherson was one of seven people to whom Meredith requested Macmillan to send copies of Ballads and Poems of Tragic Life to on 5 May 1887 (cf. The Letters of George Meredith (Oxford: 1970), no.1048), and this copy was presumably received by her shortly after the work's publication on 10 May 1887. Collie George Meredith XXXIXa; Forman George Meredith 23.
