Lot Essay

The present bowl belongs to a group of early 17th century pieces with applied relief figures. Compare the bowl with the Eight Immortals in relief on a pierced ground, illustrated and discussed by Christiaan Jörg in Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, p. 47, fig. 28, where the author suggests 'they may have been bought in the context of the regular porcelain trade of the VOC, when it had settled in Taiwan, as well as by private traders who made use of the companies network'.
