Lot Essay

Compare the blue and white dishes and vases depicting European ladies with similarly-dressed hair, discussed by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol.I, pp. 78-80, and the related famille verte European figures of ladies, ibid., vol.II, pp. 580 and 581. However, this figure is unusual in that the lady is wearing Chinese-style robes. The potter has outlined the eyes of this figure to accentuate her western features.
Two related blue and white figures of luohan on very similar bases were sold in Sotheby's London, 28 May 1968, lot 175.
