Eight Various Ivory, Wood and Lacquer Netsuke
Edo Period (Early-Mid 19th Century)
The first carved as section of bamboo; the second carved as a mask box containing an ivory mask; the third carved as a helmet with an ivory knop; the fourth in the form of a Sanbaso dancer's hat, encrusted with a gilt dog-mask (movable jaw) and a shell disc, the reverse inlaid with a shibuichi disc; the fifth carved red lacquer with Chinese figures in a landscape; the sixth black lacquer with gold hiramaki-e and shell decoration of a ho-o bird, signed Shimizu Zezui with a kao; the seventh carved from a nut and inlaid with a jade plaque carved with a fruiting branch; the eighth in the form of a tea kettle
