Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1971
South Australia. Penfolds
Lot 829 re-corked at the Penfold's Wine Clinic in 1996. Bin-soiled label. Level into neck. Lot 830 slightly bin-soiled label. Level base of neck
Very high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, 13 With Len Evans on my first visit to Australia: immensely impressive, I even suggested it was a cross between Latour and Pétrus. Most recently, still magnificent. Arguably the finest Grange. M.B.
"If you had to point to a wine which fulfilled all the ambitions of Grange, it would have to be 1971" said Max Schubert in 1993. "It was a great wine from a vintage which was great throughout South Australia". It created a sensation when it beat the best Rhône Valley wines to top the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979.
Tasting note: brick red. This surely must be on the greatest wines ever made. Exotic and fragrant aromas of gardenia and apricot with touches of blackcurrant, strawberries and raspberries. The palate is silken and viscous with apricot/meaty flavours, ripe, sweet, supple tannins, superb concentration and length. A great experience! A.C.
A superb wine. R.O.P.
