The iron screw steamer Gravina was built by John Readhead & Co. at South Shields in 1886. Owned by J. Roca & Co. of Barcelona, she was registered at 1,266 tons gross and measured 227 feet in length with a 32 foot beam. After thirty years of reliable service, she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine west of the Fastnet Rock on 7th February 1917 whilst on passage from Seville to London. Seven of her crew were killed and her captain and fourteen others were taken prisoner.
