The Adela Roca, originally launched as the Tunis, was built by C. Mitchell & Co. at Newcastle in 1873. Registered at 1,711 tons gross, she measured 241½ feet in length with a 30 foot beam and, by 1903, was owned by M. Roca Hermanos of Barcelona.

J. Jover Serra, launched as Port Caroline, was built by W. Dobson & Co. at Newcastle in 1889. Registered at 3,713 tons gross, she measured 378½ feet in length with a 44 foot beam and, by 1903, was owned by J. Jover y Costas of Barcelona.
