2o (401 x 280 mm). 69 engraved double-page maps, most by Frans Hogenberg, most embellished with ships or sea creatures, captions within elaborate scrollwork cartouches, letterpress text on rectos, woodcut capital initials, ruled in brown ink throughout (perforated stamp to title, small hole to Angliae map, lower margin of Africae map repaired, a few other marginal repairs, some minor marginal dampstaining). Modern quarter morocco. Provenance: Joannis Boer (early ownership inscription on title); Harrold Edgar Gillingham (bookplate).

This French edition incorporates all additional maps issued in 1574. Ortelius, atlas is the first modern geographical atlas, a compilation of the best maps of the period re-engraved to uniform size. Koeman III, Ort 4 and 8; Shirley 122.
