A famille rose Masonic punch bowl
Circa 1790
the exterior and interior enameled with symbols and references to the Masonic Order, the exterior with beehives and bees flanking a Bible between a compass and set-square, a work table and stonemason's tools, beneath a band of trailing foliage and floral roundels interspersed with further emblems, the centre of the interior with The Pillars at the Entrance to King Solomon's Temple containing a gilt sun bearing the initial 'G', surrounded by the sun, moon, stars and a waterfall -- 11¼in. (28.5cms) diam, (damages).
See Illustration and Detail.
In the second half of the 18th century, the Masonic Lodges began to establish their own halls and to commission items which reflected their social aspect. In addition to glasses and decanters, they commissioned porcelain mugs and punch bowls from China, with carefully specified decoration in overglaze enamels. A similar larger example was sold at Christie's King Street, 18th June 2002, Lot 349.
