An Urbino istoriato dish
Late 16th Century
Painted with stag hunt in a wooded landscape with huntsmen on horseback and on foot, hunting with dogs and spears, a fleeing stag in the middle foreground before distant mountains, the underside with concentric yellow bands (the border broken through around dish and repaired, minor fritting to rim, slight chipping to footrim)
10¼ in. (26.1 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This forms part of a group of istoriato dishes from around 1600 decorated with scenes of the chase after Jan van der Straete (Giovanni Stradano) of which two pieces are in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick, (see Johanna Lessmann, 'Italienische Majolika' Katalog der Sammlung [Brunswick, 1979], nos. 442, 443, another is in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (see Jinna Vidrova, 'Italska Majolika' Catalogue [Prague, 1955], pl. 29), and another was in the William Ridout Collection (see F.U. Ridout and W.B. Honey, 'The William Ridout Collection' Catalogue [London, 1934], no. 12).
