Dr. Konrad Oberhuber confirmed the attribution of this drawing to the previous owner.
The angel is taken from Raphael's fresco of Sibyls and angels in the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, Rome, painted about 1514 for Agostino Chigi. Raimondi's early career included periods in Bologna, Venice and Florence but from 1508 until Raphael's death in 1520 he worked as the main engraver of the painter's works. It was thanks to the work of Raimondi that Raphael's compositions became so rapidly known throughout Europe.
The rather tight and regular handling of the pen combined with more freely drawn areas such as the left hand and the hair resembles a number of early drawings by Raimondi reproduced in K. Oberhuber, 'Marcantonio Raimondi, die Bologneser Anfänge und die erste römische Periode', Humanismus in Bologna, 1490-1510, exhib. cat., Vienna, Graphische Sammlung Albertina, 1988, pp. 51-88. Another drawing by Raimondi was sold at Christie's, New York, 24 January 2001, lot 2.
