Lot Essay

A later version, with some differences but similar in layout and format, of a composition painted by Palma in 1614-16 for the choir of the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo, Venice (S. Mason Rinaldi, Palma il Giovane, l'opera completa, Milan, 1984, no. 437, fig. 619). Two further related drawings are in Budapest and at the Uffizi in Florence (S. Mason Rinaldi, op. cit., nos. D1 and D46).
