Lot Essay

A preliminary drawing for the figure to the far right of Palma's Marriage of the Virgin commissioned for the Church of the Spirito Santo, Venice, in 1611 (S. Mason Rinaldi, op. cit., no. 481). The picture was painted for Alvise Querini to replace a picture of the same subject by Palma Vecchio that had been damaged. The picture was removed to the Arsenal on the suppression of the church in 1807. By 1856 it had been returned to its original position, although in a new frame which partially obscures the figure studied in the present drawing.
