Lot Essay

The attribution has kindly been confirmed by Alastair Laing on studying the original. Mr. Laing considers the drawing to be a late work by the the artist, comparable to elements of the Saint John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness painted for the Cathedral of Saint Louis at Versailles datable to the mid-1760s (A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Lausanne and Paris, 1976, II, no. 562).
