A good 19th-Century brass Carengeot-type crystal goniometer,

The brass arc is engraved with graduations 0-180°. The brass base arm is fixed in place at the right end of the arc and pierced to slide horizontally. The pierced brass index arm is fixed in the middle by two immovable steel arms and a screw clamp.

Lot Essay

This form of crystal goniometer was invented in 1780 by Arnould Carangeot to facilitate the reproduction in terracotta of Romé de Lisle's mineral collection.
