Details

by John Lothian, 1828 -- 33cm. (13in.) high

See Colour Illustration and Detail

The globe is made up of twelve engraved gores laid on a wood and plaster sphere. The cartouche reads LOTHIAN'S NEW Terrestrial Globe ACCURATELY PROJECTED, Containing all THE RECENT DISCOVERIES Throughout the WORLD Published by John Lothian 11 St Andw Sq. Edinburgh. 1828. The equatorial is graduated in degrees of altitude and azimuth and in hours; the meridian and equinoctial colure are unmarked; the ecliptic is graduated in 12 times 1-30° with sigils for the houses of the Zodiac. The oceans show no extraneous detail; the southernmost land shown is the South Shetland Isles. The continents are uncoloured and well-detailed, showing rivers, mountains, towns and cities (numerous small areas of restoration with some detail loss; cracking around two thirds of the equator). The brass meridian circle is stamped with graduations in four quadrants. The mahogany horizon has an engraved paper ring showing degrees, compass directions, days of the month and days of the houses of the Zodiac (some paper loss, and darkening; the wooden ring has one split and is coming apart at three of the four joints). The ring is raised on three ebonised and baluster turned legs united by cross stretchers to the meridian support.
