A good late 19th-Century lacquered-brass and black enamelled monocular microscope,
signed on the foot J. SWIFT & SON LONDON, in a fitted mahogany carrying case -- 28.6cm. (11¼in.) wide

The barrel has a triple nosepiece, sliding draw-tube and rack and pinion focusing, with micrometer fine adjustment. The stage has a substage condensor mounting and plano-concave substage mirror. The main limb tilts on an axis with blued-steel headed screws, on a raised U-shaped foot. The foot is stamped on the side C.E. HODGKIN FROM BRUSH FRIENDS. Accessories include: two eyepieces, Swift 1/6in., 2/3in. and 2in. objectives, some unused glass slides, a ½oz. box of cover slips and a book of Swift tissue paper. The case has a brass carrying handle and two hooks and pins and a printed label in the lid for INSTRUCTIONS FOR KEEPING THE MICROSCOPE IN ORDER with the inscribed date 1898
