A 19th-Century lacquered-brass compound monocular microscope,
with a plaque for SMITH & BECK LONDON and numbered 1575, in a mahogany carrying case -- 30cm. (11 13/16in.) long

The body-tube is held in a sleeve from the main pillar of the instrument, which terminates in the simple stage. The concave substage mirror is attached to a sleeve on a rod beneath the stage, and a bull's-eye condensor is attached to the top of one of the A-frame supports. The whole instrument is arranged to turn on the axis between the A-frames to be placed in a horizontal position for storage. The supports are fixed to a mahogany base with space for accessories. Included are two eyepieces, two unmarked objectives in canisters, and a substage attachment with a simple light hole and movable cover. The instrument slides into one end of the mahogany carrying case, which has a brass carrying handle.
