Descriptif du lot

The pier-commode conceals a dressing-table slide beneath its top, which is bowed with canted angles in the manner of a 'French commode Table' pattern issued in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754. The veil drapery drawn up to the sides recalls Chippendale's pattern for a 'Lady's Dressing Table' in the Director, 3rd ed., 1762 (pl. CXVIII). Similar drapery featured on a commode sold anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 24-25 April 1992, lot 457.
The handles on this commode are the same pattern as those on lot 117 in this sale.
