signed on the silvered compass face Davis & Son, Derby No178 , the brass-cased and glazed compass with two sets of graduations around the circumference, eight compass points, two bubble levels, and an edge-bar needle with clamp, within a brass frame with a clamp and with a folding sight at either end and a quadrant scale with index, further with a horizontal circle with silvered scale and vernier beneath the compass, with screw clamp, raised via a ball and socket joint to a brass staff mounting, on a later display base
