With short wide, double-edged blade (heavily discoloured, several nicks to edge), cast brass hilt with scale decoration to the grip, crosspiece in the form of a tablet, langets bearing the Phrygian cap of liberty device, and steel knuckle-guard and quillons, in its brass scabbard with open panels of green cloth, twin suspension-rings and ornate chape, the locket now mounted with the letter 'N' in white-metal

The Ecole de Mars (named after the Roman God of War) was established by the French revolutionary authorities in June 1794 as an academy for 3,500 potential army officers. It was not a success, and was disbanded, to the delight of the students, only five months later. Four of its former pupils did however become Generals under the First Empire
