Lot Essay

The recto of sheet was page LXIII from the sketchbook CP IV; the verso page LXIV.

The verso is a sketch from the artist's plaster cast of the Écorché, the subject of Cézanne's numerous studies and paintings. A tradition dating back to Renaissance times, artists worked from casts of the Écorché - the human body in musculature form, to better understand the movement of the body. No longer intact, the cast is preserved at Cézanne's Lauves studio in Aix-en-Provence.
