Lot Essay

The recto of sheet was page XLIII from the sketchbook CP IV; the verso page XLIV.

Whilst Rewald (op. cit.) dates this watercolour to 1896, Venturi, in his notes for the revised edition of his 1936 catalogue (which was never published) proposed a later date of 1900.
