The verso of this sheet was page LIII from the sketchbook CP I.
The recto is after a drawing by Luca Signorelli, The Living carrying the Dead (Musée du Louvre), of which Cézanne owned a photograph, now in his studio in Aix-en-Provence. Chappuis commented on this work: 'An exceptionally fine drawing nothwithstanding its rather special nature' (op. cit.).
Venturi was not aware of Cézanne's source, and considered the work: 'Jambes: étude d'après nature pour les Nos. 390, 393, 394' (op. cit.).
