Lot Essay

The recto of this sheet was page XLII from the sketchbook CP IV; the verso page XLI.

Whilst Venturi (op. cit.) opted for a vaguer title of 'homme barbu', Chappuis (op. cit., 1973) identified the man in profile as Ambroise Vollard.

The first sketch from the right on the verso is a study for Bethsabée (see note for lot 332).
