Lot Essay

Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) was the outstanding metal worker and gilder of the Empire period, studying under Pajou & Houdon and later working for Gouthiere after 1774. He collaborated on the decoration of Louis XVI's coronation coach and supplied furniture mounts for many of the leading furniture makers of the time, as well as clock cases and mounts for the Sevres factory. He prudently went over to the manufacture of arms during the Revolution, but was later patronised by Napoleon who made him Ciseleur de l'Empereur. He continued his collaboration with furniture makers such as Weisweiler after the Restauration of the Bourbons in 1815 until his retirement in 1823
