Lot Essay

The mirrored and marble-topped pier-table has plinth-supported pillars and flowered paterae enrichment, in the manner of George Smith's 'Pier Table and Glass' pattern in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808 (pl.120); while these pillars are robustly carved with acanthus foliage and palms, after the 'Roman candelabrum' fashion, and relate more closely to the antique style of Smith's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826.
