The cover delicately painted with Dongpo (Su shi) holding an inkstone seated beneath a pine tree beside an inscription signed Wang Dafeng and with an iron-red seal, kun, the reddish-brown border and sides decorated in gilding, the inkstone with unglazed grinding area and glazed well, the base with a four-character collector's seal mark, Xi Heng zhen cang (Prized Treasure of Xi Heng) in iron-red enamel

The inscription may be translated, 'The left-over spirit of Dongpo During the last third (xiahuan, 21st-30th day in a month) of the eighth month, wuchen year (1928) [this was] painted for the enjoyment of Mr. Xiheng by Wang Dafan of Xishan'.
Dongpo, also known as Su Dongpo, is another name for the famous Northern Song dynasty poet Su Shi, the author of the 'Prose poems on the Red Cliff' and many other famous poems.
