Parts 3, 4, 11 and 12 only (of 12) in three volumes, 2o (391 x 249 mm; 380 x 264 mm; 387 x 254 mm). Engraved title-page to vol. III and 269 plates on 266 leaves, all but 20 double-page, by B. Stoopendael after drawings by Matteus a St. Joseph, with engraved captions in Latin, Malabar, Arabic and Brahmi script (some pale dampstaining to a few plates in Vol. I, some marginal worming in vol. II, few occasional pale foxmarks). Vol. I bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt; vols. II and III in uniform 18th-century calf, spines gilt (vol. I hinges cracked, wear at corners, some light wear to others). Provenance: sold Swann Galleries, 15 November 1962, lot 74 (first volume).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MAJOR FLORA OF THE EAST INDIES. "One of the most celebrated of pre-Linnaean books....It remains an important contribution to the botany and ethnology of Southern India" (Blunt & Stearn). Rheede tot Draakestein was governor of Malabar 1669-1676 for the Dutch East India Company and was appointed the head of the Company's operations in India in 1684.
