Lot Essay
For a cabaret 'Calabre' without a tray painted by Xhrouet in 1769 with virtually identical decoration, the pieces larger in scale than those of the present solitaire, see anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 26 October 2001, lot 215.
Philippe Xhrouet, père, recorded at Vincennes and Sèvres 1750-1775 as a versatile painter whose mark is often found on pieces of the 1760's and 1770's painted with birds and flowers. His mark is often confused with that of Micaud and has only recently been confirmed as that found on the pieces of the present service. See David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18th Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1997, p. 77, note.
