Each on a molded and domed circular base, with knopped baluster stem, the body with an engraved border of leaves and acorns, engraved with a coat-of-arms, the interior gilt, marked on body, also struck with retailer's mark John Hay, Leith

Lot Essay

John Hay acted as both retailer and manufacturer of silver in the Scottish port city of Leith. His work was sent to the Edinburgh office for assaying, but he also stamped his retailed wares with his firm and town mark.
