Details
An unusual 19th-Century fruitwood combination lock box,
-- 32.3cm. (12¾in.) wide

See Colour Illustration

The box comprises two sections: the upper section houses ten rollers inserted into the front of the box. Each roller is numbered and has a turning handle at the front, each with ten numbered positions. On the left hand side of the box are ten numbered apertures. Through each of these in turn is passed the pushrod, with the rollers set to the appropriate position for each position of the pushrod. If the rollers are positioned correctly for each aperture, the rod passes through and pushes out each of ten numbered buttons on the right hand side of the box. The buttons are sprung to return into place unless turned until the number is visible on the upper surface. They then remain extended from the box and the hinged top surface can be lifted from the left hand side. Once this is done, a catch is released to enable the whole top section of the box to be raised to reveal the interior of the box.
