Conceived in 1840-1, Lion qui marche and its pendant, Tigre qui marche (see following lot and lot 199), are among Barye's most reproduced works. Although over 100 épreuves of the former and 60 of the latter were cast during the sculptor's lifetime, the popularity of the models and proliferation of casts may be credited directly to Barbedienne, who edited both, numerously and in large quantities, from Barye's death, right up until he Second World War.
Another cast of this model, formerly in the collection of Eduardo Guinle (d. 1941), was sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 12 ($13,145).
