Although its title and size specification imply that the present lot is merely a smaller version of Barye's 10½-inch model of the same name, Cheval demi-sang, tête levée, réduction actually differs quite significantly from its larger namesake. It seems likely the model is that which was first offered in Besse's 1844 catalogue as Petit cheval. The bronze modèle for the work was acquired at the Atelier sale by Goupil, subsequently edited by Barbedienne until the mid-1920s and, later in the collection of Eduardo Guinle (d. 1941), was sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 33 ($16,730).
