Lot Essay

Modelled in the early 1830s, an edition of Daim was not offered until Barye's 1862 catalogue. After 1876, the model was edited by Barbedienne. The Barye cachets stamped on the present cast, and the form of its base, would suggest that this is an earlier épreuve d'artiste, dating from between 1838 and 1850.

Another cast of this model, formerly in the collection of Eduardo Guinle (d. 1941), was sold in these rooms, 25 April 2003, lot 56 ($4,540).
