Lot Essay

Dating from around 1840, in his early catalogues, Barye lists Épagneul No1, première version as the pendant to Braque, première version (see Poletti & Richarme, 2000, no. A22, p. 144). The model seems to have been particularly popular during the period of Barye's association with Émile Martin, the latter's accounts noting that thirty-four épreuves were sold between 1850 and 1857. At the Atelier sale, the modèle was acquired and subsequently edited by Delafontaine, with casts generally bearing the AD stamp.
